How To Read The Macedonian Cyrillic Alphabet
Author
If you’re thinking about learning Macedonian, the first thing you probably see is the alphabet.
To an English speaker, it looks like a secret code. There are backwards _N_s, squares, and letters that look like spiders.
Does the Macedonian alphabet look scary?
It’s actually much easier to learn than you think.
In fact, once you learn the sounds, reading Macedonian is easier than reading English.
Why?
Because Macedonian is perfectly phonetic.
In English, the letter “a” sounds different in “cat”, “car”, and “about”. In Macedonian, the letter А always makes the same sound. There are no silent letters and no guessing games.
There’s a famous rule in Macedonian invented by Krste Misirkov:
“Write as you speak, and read as it’s written.”
This means that if you can say a word, you can write it. If you see a word, you can read it perfectly.
Keep reading, and I’ll break the alphabet down into simple groups so you can start reading today.
Table of Contents:
The “True Friends”
Let’s start with the easiest part.
There are several letters in the Macedonian Cyrillic alphabet that look exactly like English letters and make the exact same sound.
You already know how to read these!
| Cyrillic Letter | English Sound | Example Word |
|---|---|---|
| А a | A as in “Father” | Атоми (Atomi) - Atoms |
| Е e | E as in “Pet” | Екран (Ekran) - Screen |
| К к | K as in “Skip” | Какао (Kakao) - Cocoa |
| М м | M as in “Mom” | Мама (Mama) - Mom |
| О о | O as in “Hot” | Опера (Opera) - Opera |
| Т т | T as in “Stop” | Татко (Tatko) - Dad |
See? You can already read words like Мама (Mama) and Тактика (Taktika).
The “Tricksters” (False Friends)
This is the only part where you need to be careful.
These letters look like English letters, but they make a completely different sound. Your brain will want to read them in English, but you have to retrain it.
For example, the letter that looks like an H is actually the letter N.
| Cyrillic Letter | English Sound | Macedonian Example |
|---|---|---|
| В в | V as in “Vet” (Looks like B) | Вино (Vino) - Wine |
| Н н | N as in “No” (Looks like H) | Нос (Nos) - Nose |
| Р р | R as in “Roll” (Looks like P) | Ресторан (Restoran) - Restaurant |
| С с | S as in “Snake” (Looks like C) | Сестра (Sestra) - Sister |
| Х х | H as in “Hot” (Looks like X) | Хотел (Hotel) - Hotel |
| У у | U as in “Boot” (Looks like Y) | Уво (Uvo) - Ear |
| Ј ј | Y as in “Yes” (Looks like J) | Јогурт (Jogurt) - Yogurt |
Note: The Macedonian Р is a “rolled” R, similar to Spanish or Italian.
The “New Friends”
These letters look completely different from English. Since they don’t look like anything familiar, they are actually easy to memorize because you won’t get them confused with other letters.
| Cyrillic Letter | English Sound | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Б б | B as in Boy | Top has a horizontal line |
| Г г | G as in Go | Looks like a gallows |
| Д д | D as in Dog | Looks like a triangle with feet |
| З з | Z as in Zoo | Looks like the number 3 |
| И и | I as in Machine | Looks like a backwards N |
| Л л | L as in Love | Looks like a tent |
| П п | P as in Pot | Looks like the Pi symbol |
| Ф ф | F as in Father | A circle with a line through it |
| Ц ц | Ts as in Pizza | Like the end of “Cats” |
| Ч ч | Ch as in Chip | Looks like the number 4 |
| Ж ж | Zh as in Vision | Like a bug or spider |
| Ш ш | Sh as in Shop | Looks like a pitchfork |
The Special Macedonian Letters
This is what makes Macedonian unique. While Macedonian shares many letters with Russian, Serbian, or Bulgarian, it has a few letters that are very special.
These letters usually represent “soft” sounds or specific combinations.
1. Ѓ and Ќ (The Soft Sounds)
- Ѓ ѓ (Gje): This sounds like a very soft “G”. It is somewhere between the G in “Geese” and the J in “Jewel”. In some dialects, it sounds very soft, almost like “y”, while in others it is harder.
- Ќ ќ (Kje): This is a soft “K”. It sounds like the Cu in “Cute”.
2. Љ and Њ (The “Liquid” Sounds)
- Љ љ (Lj): This is an L and a J combined. It sounds like the lli in “Million”.
- Њ њ (Nj): This is an N and a J combined. It sounds like the ni in “Onion” or the ñ in Spanish “Jalapeño”.
3. Џ and Ѕ (The Strong Sounds)
- Џ џ (Dzh): This sounds like the J in “Jungle” or “Job”. It is a hard sound.
- Ѕ ѕ (Dz): This is a very cool letter! It looks like an ‘S’ but it makes a “Dz” sound. You hear it in the word “Kuds” or the end of “Kids”. It is very common in Macedonian but rare in other Slavic languages.
Practice Reading
Now that you have seen the letters, let’s look at how they come together in a simple conversation.
Try to read the Cyrillic first, then check the transliteration (pronunciation guide).
Здраво, како си?
Јас сум добро, фала.
Како се викаш?
Јас се викам Дариа.
Summary
Learning the alphabet is the first step to fluency. It might take you a few days to memorize the shapes, but because Macedonian is consistent, you will never have to guess how to pronounce a word.
Here’s my advice:
- Write your name in Cyrillic.
- Try to read street signs on Google Maps in Macedonia.
- Don’t rely on “Romanized” (Latin script) Macedonian - it will slow you down in the long run.
